my friend told me that some stores have fake security cameras instead of real ones, just to intimidate criminals, shoplifters, and the like. is this true? if so, what do they look like? and how can you tell? of all the security cameras i’ve seen, all of them look the same… i can’t tell "fake" ones from the real ones.

Blanket surveillance like CCTV systems, facial recognition software, telecommunication and vehicle tracking, the DNA database etc. etc. does nothing to stop criminals, terrorists, or ‘social problems’ and it doesn’t make anybody feel any safer.

If it doens’t solve any of the problems it was brought in for, what exactly is it there for?

In this particular case the staff has let us view it (even got some of it recorded on my cell phone) But they are playing hard to get to release a copy. Is there anything I can do, if they deny it after a police request?
